Business Card Printing

Business cards remain a simple and practical way to share your contact details and present your business professionally. Our standard UK business cards measure 85 x 55mm and are printed on 350gsm white card, giving you a sturdy format suitable for everyday business use.

Upload your own print-ready artwork and choose between single or double-sided printing. Cards can be supplied in portrait or landscape orientation, giving you flexibility to use a traditional horizontal layout or a more distinctive vertical design.

What Size is a UK Business Card?

The standard size commonly used for business cards in the UK is 85 x 55mm. This compact format is designed to fit comfortably into wallets, purses, card holders and pockets while still providing enough space for essential information.

Typical business card content includes your name, company name, job title, telephone number, email address, website and logo. Keeping the layout clear and uncluttered usually produces a more professional and readable result than trying to fit too much information into the available space.

What are Business Cards Used For?

Business cards are useful anywhere you need to exchange contact details quickly and professionally. They are commonly used at meetings, networking events, exhibitions, trade shows, appointments and customer visits.

They can also be kept on reception desks, counters or included with orders and correspondence. For tradespeople, freelancers and small businesses, carrying a supply of cards provides an easy way to leave contact information with potential customers.

Portrait or Landscape Business Cards

Landscape is the traditional orientation for UK business cards and provides a familiar layout for logos, names and contact details.

Portrait cards create a taller, narrower design and can be useful when you want your card to look different from a conventional horizontal layout. They can work particularly well with centred typography, vertical logos or simpler designs with fewer pieces of information.

Whichever orientation you choose, readability should remain the priority.

Single or Double-Sided Business Cards

Single-sided cards are a good choice when your logo and essential contact information can be presented clearly on one face.

Double-sided printing gives you extra room without making the card larger. The reverse can be used for a logo, slogan, social details, services, QR code or other supporting information, while keeping the main contact side clean and easy to read.

350gsm White Card

Business cards are printed on 350gsm white card, providing a substantial feel while remaining practical for everyday use.

The white surface gives artwork a clean base and works well with a wide range of designs, from simple text-led cards to colourful branding and photography.

UK or US Sized Business Cards?

Our standard business cards use the UK size of 85 x 55mm. However, artwork created using online design services is sometimes supplied at the US business card size of 89 x 51mm.

Rather than forcing artwork designed for different proportions into the UK format, we also offer US Sized Business Cards for files that have already been created at 89 x 51mm. Choosing the size that matches your artwork helps preserve the original layout and spacing.

Business Card Artwork Guide

Standard UK business cards have a finished size of 85 x 55mm. When preparing artwork for print, your file should include the required bleed beyond the finished edge and keep important text, logos and contact details safely inside the trim line.

We require 2mm bleed on every edge, giving an overall artwork size of 89 x 59mm. Background colours, photographs and graphics intended to continue to the edge of the finished card should extend fully into this bleed area.

We also recommend keeping important content at least 3mm inside the finished edge. This safe area is particularly important on a small format such as a business card, where text or logos positioned too close to the edge can make the finished design look cramped.

Preparing Print-Ready Business Card Artwork

Artwork should be created at the correct dimensions, with images and graphics ideally supplied at 300dpi at their final printed size.

Where possible, prepare artwork using CMYK colour rather than RGB. Screens display colour in RGB, while commercial printing typically reproduces colour using CMYK. Because the two colour systems work differently, some colours may appear slightly different in print compared with how they look on screen.

Business cards have limited space, so clear typography and sensible spacing are especially important. Avoid reducing text excessively simply to fit more information onto the card. Contact details should remain comfortably readable, and logos should have enough surrounding space to remain visually clear.

Before Uploading Your File, Check That:

  • The document is the correct 85 x 55mm finished size
  • 2mm bleed has been included on every edge
  • Important content remains within the recommended 3mm safe area
  • Text is large enough to read comfortably
  • Images and graphics are high enough resolution for print
  • Artwork matches the portrait or landscape orientation selected when ordering
  • Both sides are included where double-sided printing has been selected

Designing a Clear, Effective Business Card

A business card only has a small amount of space, so the most important information needs to be easy to find and comfortable to read. A clear layout will usually be more effective than trying to include every possible detail.

The examples below show how the same size of business card can work very differently depending on how the available space is used.

Example of a clear and well laid out business card design

Good Business Card Design

A well-designed business card should make the key information clear at a glance. Company name or logo, the person's name and job title, telephone number and email address are usually the most important details.

Good spacing helps each element remain easy to read, while keeping text comfortably inside the safe area prevents the design from feeling crowded around the edges.

The aim is not to fill every available space. Leaving some clear space around the content can make the card easier to scan and give important information more prominence.

Avoid Overcrowding Your Business Card

Trying to include too much information can quickly make a business card difficult to read. Long lists of services, several contact methods, large amounts of descriptive text and unnecessary details often result in the font size being reduced simply to make everything fit.

Text that looks acceptable when enlarged on a computer screen may be much harder to read once it is printed at the finished 85 x 55mm size.

If your design feels crowded, consider removing less important information or moving supporting details to the reverse of a double-sided card. A website or QR code can also provide access to additional information without having to place everything directly on the card.

Keep the Finished Size in Mind

When checking your artwork, view the design at approximately its actual printed size rather than relying only on a zoomed-in screen view. This gives you a much better indication of whether names, contact details and other important text will be comfortable to read on the finished card.

The strongest business card designs usually prioritise a few essential details, clear typography and sensible spacing rather than trying to use every millimetre of available space.

Need Help Checking Your Artwork?

Use the business card artwork diagram as a visual reference if you are unsure about the finished dimensions, bleed or safe area. Checking these details before uploading can help prevent unwanted white edges, cropped information or important content sitting too close to the finished edge.
