AI-generated artwork prepared for professional printing

How to Get AI-Generated Artwork Printed

AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot are making it increasingly easy to create your own business cards, flyers, posters and other designs. Once you have created artwork you're happy with, the next question is often: how do I get my AI-generated artwork professionally printed?

The good news is that AI-generated artwork can be used for professional printing. However, before placing an order, it is worth checking the size, proportions, image quality, bleed and important text to make sure the file is suitable for the product you want to print.

Quick answer: AI-generated artwork can be professionally printed. Choose the product you want, check that the artwork has the correct proportions and enough resolution, allow for bleed and safe areas, carefully proofread the design, then upload your file and check the preview before ordering.

Can AI-Generated Artwork Be Professionally Printed?

Yes. Artwork created using an AI image or design tool can be professionally printed in much the same way as artwork created using traditional design software.

The important thing is the finished file rather than which application was used to create it. If the image is large enough, has suitable proportions and contains the information you want printed, it can often be used for products such as business cards, flyers, invitations and posters.

AI tools are primarily designed to create digital images, however, so the resulting artwork may need a few checks before it is sent to print.

What AI Tools Can I Use to Create Print Artwork?

There are now many AI tools capable of creating images and layouts. Customers may create artwork using services such as:

  • ChatGPT
  • Google Gemini
  • Microsoft Copilot
  • Adobe Firefly
  • Other AI image-generation and design tools

The exact tool is less important than the file it produces. Before ordering your printing, check that the finished artwork is suitable for the size and shape of the product you have chosen.

1. Decide What You Want to Print

Start by deciding what the AI-generated design will be used for. A business card has very different proportions from an A5 flyer, while a poster requires a much larger image than either.

For example, some common finished sizes are:

  • UK business card: 85 × 55 mm
  • US business card: 89 × 51 mm
  • A6 flyer: 105 × 148 mm
  • A5 flyer: 148 × 210 mm
  • A4 flyer or poster: 210 × 297 mm
  • A3 poster: 297 × 420 mm

If possible, tell the AI tool the intended proportions or finished format when creating the design. Starting with artwork that closely matches the final printed shape reduces the amount of cropping or scaling required later.

2. Check the Proportions of the Artwork

One of the most important checks is the shape of the image.

AI tools frequently create artwork using common screen proportions such as square or widescreen formats. These may not match standard UK print sizes.

For example, an A5 flyer is 148 × 210 mm and a UK business card is 85 × 55 mm. If a square design is forced into either of these shapes, part of the artwork may need to be cropped or blank space may appear around it.

Whenever possible, generate or adjust the artwork so its proportions closely match the product you plan to order.

3. Check the Resolution and Image Quality

An AI-generated image can look very sharp on a computer monitor while still being too small for the size at which you want to print it.

This is because screens display images using pixels, while printing spreads those pixels across a physical area. The larger the image is printed, the more image detail is required.

For artwork that will be viewed close up, approximately 300 dpi at the final printed size is a useful target.

When your AI tool offers different download sizes, choose the highest-quality or largest version available. Avoid repeatedly saving or compressing the image, as this can reduce its quality.

4. Check Any Text Very Carefully

Text deserves particular attention when it has been generated as part of an AI image.

Look closely at every word rather than assuming that text which looks convincing at first glance is correct.

Pay particular attention to:

  • Business names
  • Telephone numbers
  • Email addresses
  • Website addresses
  • Postal addresses
  • Prices
  • Dates and times
  • Job titles
  • Product or service names

If any of these details are wrong, ask the AI tool to correct the artwork or amend the design before uploading it for printing.

5. Test QR Codes Before Printing

If your design contains a QR code, scan it with a phone before placing your order.

A shape generated by AI may look like a QR code without actually containing usable information. Even a genuine QR code can stop working if it has been distorted, cropped or placed too close to other design elements.

Always test the final code directly from the artwork you intend to upload.

6. Allow for Print Bleed

If a background colour, photograph or graphic is intended to run right to the edge of the finished product, the artwork needs to extend slightly beyond the trim edge.

This additional area is called bleed. Short Run Print normally requires 2 mm bleed where artwork prints to the edge.

AI-generated designs often finish exactly at the visible edge of the image, so there may not automatically be any additional artwork available for trimming.

If possible, create or extend the background beyond the final trim size rather than adding a white border around the image.

7. Keep Important Content Inside the Safe Area

While background artwork should extend beyond the trim into the bleed area, important information should move in the opposite direction.

We recommend keeping important text, logos, telephone numbers and other essential content at least 3 mm inside the finished edge.

This safe area provides some room for normal cutting tolerances and prevents important content from appearing uncomfortably close to the edge.

8. Remember That Printed Colours May Look Different

AI-generated images are usually created to look good on a screen. Screens display colour using RGB light, while most full-colour commercial printing reproduces artwork using CMYK inks or toners.

Some bright blues, greens and other vivid colours visible on a monitor cannot be reproduced in exactly the same way in CMYK.

You should therefore expect some difference between the image displayed on your monitor and the finished printed item. This applies to AI-generated artwork just as it does to other digitally created designs.

9. Check the Artwork at Full Size

Before uploading the file, open it and look closely at the finished design.

AI-generated images can occasionally contain details that appear convincing when viewed small but look unusual when enlarged.

Check details such as:

  • Faces and hands, if present
  • Small illustrations and icons
  • Logos and symbols
  • Text and numbers
  • Repeated patterns
  • Fine lines
  • Objects near the edge of the design

It is much easier to correct something before printing than to discover it after a batch has been produced.

10. Make Sure You Can Use the Artwork

Before using AI-generated artwork commercially, make sure you are permitted to use the images, logos, photographs and other elements included in the design.

If you have asked an AI tool to reproduce an existing brand, character, photograph or copyrighted design, check that you have the appropriate rights or permission before using it in your printed material.

11. Upload Your AI-Generated Artwork

Once you are happy with the design, you can upload the artwork as part of the Short Run Print ordering process.

Choose the product and print options you require, then click Add to Basket and Upload.

After your file has uploaded, you will be shown a low-resolution preview so you can check how the artwork is positioned.

You can also adjust the scale of the artwork if required.

If something doesn't look right, return to your AI or design tool, make the required changes and upload the corrected artwork before placing the order.

12. Check the Preview Before Ordering

Your uploaded artwork preview is an important final check.

Make sure the correct file has been uploaded, the orientation is right and no important content appears too close to the edge.

The preview is shown again in your basket, giving you another opportunity to check the artwork before completing your order.

Before printing AI-generated artwork: check the product size, artwork proportions, resolution, text, contact details, bleed and safe areas, then carefully review the uploaded preview before ordering.

Common Questions About Printing AI-Generated Artwork

Yes. If Copilot has produced a suitable image or design, it can be uploaded for printing. Use the highest-quality version available and make sure it matches the shape of the printed product.

Can AI create a business card that I can have printed?

Yes. AI tools can create business card designs, but check that the artwork matches the finished business card proportions and that names, telephone numbers, email addresses and other details are correct before printing.

Can AI create a flyer that I can have printed?

Yes. AI-generated flyer artwork can be professionally printed. For the best result, create the artwork in proportions that match the flyer size you intend to order and make sure backgrounds extend into the required bleed area.

What resolution should AI artwork be for printing?

For items that will be viewed close up, approximately 300 dpi at the final printed size is a useful target. The important factor is whether the image contains enough pixels for the physical size at which it will be printed.

Does AI-generated artwork need bleed?

If the design runs to the finished edge, yes. Short Run Print normally requires 2 mm bleed beyond the trim edge. Background images and colours should continue into this area rather than stopping at the finished size.

Why does AI-generated text need checking?

AI-generated lettering can sometimes look correct at first glance while containing incorrect words, numbers or characters. Always proofread every part of the design, particularly contact details, prices, dates and website addresses.

Can I adjust my AI artwork after uploading it?

You can adjust the scale of your artwork using the Short Run Print preview. If the design itself needs changing, return to your AI or design tool, create the corrected version and upload it again before placing your order.
