Invitation Size Guide

Choosing the right invitation size depends on the style of your design, how much information you need to include and the type of event you are planning. From compact A6 invitations to larger A5 cards and modern square formats, each size gives you a different amount of space for wording, photographs and artwork.

Our invitations are printed on 300gsm white card and are available single or double sided. FREE white peel and seal envelopes are included with every order, making them suitable for everything from birthdays and parties to celebrations, events and other special occasions.

Invitation Format Finished Size Ideal For Why Choose This Size?
A6 Invitations 105 x 148mm Birthday invitations, children's parties, celebrations, private events, family occasions and compact invitation designs. A practical and popular size that provides plenty of room for the essential event details while remaining easy to hand out or send with an envelope.
A5 Invitations 148 x 210mm Larger invitations, milestone celebrations, corporate events, detailed event information and image-led designs. The larger format provides additional space for photographs, schedules, directions or extra wording without making the design feel crowded.
132mm Square Invitations 132 x 132mm Parties, celebrations, birthdays, modern event invitations and creative or highly visual designs. The square shape provides a distinctive alternative to traditional rectangular formats and works particularly well for bold or contemporary artwork.

Choosing the Right Invitation Size

A6 is a versatile choice for most invitations and provides enough room for key details such as the date, time, venue and RSVP information. A5 gives you more space when your design contains additional wording, larger images or detailed event information, while the 132mm square invitation offers a distinctive format for designs where presentation is particularly important.

Single-sided printing is ideal for straightforward designs, while double-sided invitations provide additional room for directions, schedules, dress codes, RSVP details or other useful information. Every order also includes FREE white peel and seal envelopes for posting or presenting your finished invitations.

All of our invitations are printed on 300gsm white card for a sturdy, professional finish. Select an invitation size above to view the available printing options and prices.

Invitation Printing for Parties, Events and Special Occasions

Printed invitations are a simple way to give guests the important details of an event in a format that feels considered and easy to keep.

At Short Run Print, invitations are available in A6, A5 and 132mm square sizes, all printed on 300gsm white card. A6 and A5 invitations can be ordered in portrait or landscape orientation, and all formats are available with single or double-sided printing.

FREE white peel and seal envelopes are included with every invitation order, giving you a convenient way to post, hand out or present your finished cards.

Your artwork is entirely your own, so the same printing service can be used for birthdays, parties, celebrations, private events, business functions and many other occasions.

Upload your completed design, preview it before purchase and place your order with free standard delivery.

Choosing an Invitation to Suit the Occasion

The best invitation format depends less on the type of event and more on how much information and imagery your design needs to contain.

A6 is a practical choice when the invitation only needs the main details, such as the event name, date, time, venue and RSVP information.

A5 provides considerably more room and can be useful when you want larger photographs, more decorative artwork, a schedule or additional information without reducing the text too far.

The 132mm square format offers a different visual shape and can work particularly well for invitations where the design itself is an important part of the presentation.

What Information Should an Invitation Include?

An invitation should answer the main questions a guest is likely to have without making them search through the design.

The exact wording will depend on the event, but most invitations will usually need some combination of:

  • What the event is
  • Who the invitation is for
  • The date
  • The start time
  • The venue
  • The full address if required
  • RSVP details
  • A response deadline
  • Dress code or theme
  • Any useful arrival or parking information

For a simple party invitation, only a few of these details may be necessary. For a larger event or formal occasion, you may want to include more information or use the reverse side for supporting details. Keeping the key information easy to identify is usually more important than trying to fill every available part of the card.

Single or Double-Sided Invitation Printing?

Single-sided printing works well when the design is straightforward and all of the essential information fits comfortably on the front.

This can be particularly effective for invitations where the artwork or photograph is intended to be the main feature and the event details are relatively brief.

Double-sided printing gives you additional space without changing the size of the invitation.

The front can be used for the main design, event title and essential information, while the reverse can contain practical details such as directions, timings, RSVP instructions, parking information, gift notes or additional wording. Using the back in this way can help keep the front of the invitation visually cleaner.

Portrait, Landscape or Square Invitations?

The orientation of an invitation can have a noticeable effect on the way the design feels.

Portrait works naturally for layouts where information is arranged vertically and is a familiar choice for invitations featuring centred text, photographs or decorative borders.

Landscape provides a wider area and can suit designs with horizontal photographs, wide illustrations or information arranged across the page.

A6 and A5 invitations are available in either portrait or landscape, so you can choose the orientation that best suits your artwork.

The 132mm square format has equal dimensions on all sides, creating a more balanced shape that works well with centred designs, bold typography and image-led artwork. It is usually best to choose the orientation before creating the design so that text and imagery can be positioned around the final proportions from the beginning.

Planning Your Design

Planning the Information on Your Invitation

A good invitation usually has a clear order of importance.

The first thing a guest should notice might be the occasion, a name, a birthday age, an event title or simply the words inviting them to attend.

The date, time and venue should then be easy to find without competing with decorative elements.

Smaller details such as RSVP instructions, dress codes or directions can sit lower in the layout or be moved to the reverse when using double-sided printing. Try to avoid making important information too small simply to preserve more space for decoration. An attractive invitation still needs to be practical, and details such as the date and venue should remain clear at the finished printed size.

Choosing A6, A5 or Square Invitations

Each format provides a different balance between size and available design space.

A6 Invitations

A6 measures 105 x 148mm and is a useful all-round invitation size. It provides enough room for the main event information while remaining compact and easy to post or hand out. It works particularly well when the wording is concise and the design does not need large photographs or several sections of information.

A5 Invitations

A5 measures 148 x 210mm and provides significantly more space. This can be useful for invitations containing detailed event information, larger images, schedules or decorative layouts that benefit from more room.

132mm Square Invitations

The 132 x 132mm square format offers an alternative to traditional rectangular invitations. Its proportions lend themselves well to centred artwork, bold illustrations and designs where visual presentation plays a particularly important role.

Free Envelopes Included with Every Invitation Order

Every invitation order includes FREE white peel and seal envelopes as standard, with an envelope supplied for each invitation.

The envelopes provide a practical way to protect your printed invitations when posting them and help keep the contents private until they are opened.

They are also useful when invitations are being handed out personally, giving the finished cards a neat and convenient presentation.

Because envelopes are included with every order, there is no need to select them separately or purchase matching envelopes elsewhere before sending your invitations to guests.

Designing Invitations for Different Types of Event

Because you supply your own artwork, the invitation does not need to fit a particular theme or occasion.

The same card formats can be used for children's parties, milestone birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations, private functions, launches, business events, social gatherings or many other occasions.

Rather than trying to make the design look like a generic invitation, it can be more effective to let the artwork reflect the event itself.

A children's party invitation might use bright illustrations and large playful wording, while a business event could use a much simpler layout with restrained branding and clear practical information. The printing remains the same; it is the artwork that gives each invitation its individual character.

Using Photographs and Artwork on Invitations

Invitations often rely heavily on appearance, so image quality is worth checking before uploading your file.

Photographs should be large enough to reproduce clearly at the finished print size, particularly if an image covers most of the card.

Logos, illustrations and decorative graphics should also remain sharp and should not be enlarged excessively from very small originals.

If your artwork contains text over an image, make sure there is enough contrast for the wording to remain easy to read. Decorative elements can extend towards the edges of the design, but important names, dates and other essential information should remain safely inside the trimmed area.

Supplying Your Own Invitation Artwork

Short Run Print is designed for customers who already have their own completed invitation design.

Your artwork may have been created by a graphic designer, produced in desktop design software, prepared using an online design tool or made with the help of an AI-assisted design service.

We do not provide pre-designed invitation templates for customisation. Instead, you upload your finished artwork when ordering.

The preview allows you to check that you have selected the correct file before completing your purchase.

Before Uploading Your Invitation Artwork

  • Check that the artwork matches the invitation size you are ordering
  • Confirm portrait or landscape orientation where applicable
  • Make sure important names, dates and details are easy to read
  • Use suitable-quality photographs and graphics
  • Include any required bleed around the outer edge
  • Keep important text safely away from the trim
  • Check both sides carefully if ordering double-sided printing
  • Make sure the design still reads clearly at the final printed size

Printed on 300gsm White Card

All of our invitations are printed on 300gsm white card.

The heavier stock gives the finished invitation a more substantial feel than standard paper and provides a suitable surface for both text-led and image-led designs.

Using one consistent card weight also keeps the ordering process straightforward. Rather than choosing between several stocks, you can concentrate on the size, orientation and whether you require single or double-sided printing.

The white surface provides a neutral base for a wide variety of artwork, from colourful party designs to simpler formal layouts.

Short Run Invitation Printing in the UK

Invitation quantities can vary considerably depending on the occasion.

A small private event may only require a modest number of cards, while a larger party, celebration or business event may need significantly more.

Short-run printing gives you the flexibility to order closer to the quantity you actually need rather than committing to unnecessarily large numbers.

At Short Run Print, choose your invitation size, orientation and single or double-sided printing before uploading your artwork. White peel and seal envelopes and standard delivery are included free with every order.
